Emirati authorities have silenced the voice of human rights activist Ahmed Mansoor, who is enduring a ten-year prison term for daring to share his political opinions on social media.
Mansoor, 51, is an engineer and a father of four. He was first detained by Emirati authorities in 2017 and then convicted of “publishing false information, rumours, and lies about the UAE”.
In prison, he has faced poor conditions, including being held in solitary confinement and in a cold cell. He has been denied a lawyer for more than a year and the trial that convicted him was closed. Now, he is even denied family visits.
Punishing Mansoor in this way for practicing his right to freedom of expression exposes how UAE authorities disrespect citizens’ fundamental human rights for their own benefit.
