On Sunday, January 30, 2022, the Cairo Criminal Court referred the papers of 10 defendants in the Helwan Bridges to the Grand Mufti of the Republic to give his opinion on their execution, and scheduled the next session to announce their verdict on February 19, 2022.
The case, filed in 2013, includes 215 defendants, all of whom were added to the terrorist list.
The court accused the defendants of joining a “an outlawed group that calls for the disruption of the provisions of the constitution and laws and disturbing public peace and order”, which defendants denied.
Human rights groups also emphasised that the raised charges are fake, baseless, illegal and extracted under torture.
Since General Abdelfattah El-Sisi assumed power in Egypt, Egyptian judiciary system has been referring political opponents to unfair trials that lack the minimum standard of a fair trial and sentencing them to extrajudicial execution.
