Massive repressive campaigns against opponents have been taking place since July 2013. Tens of thousands of citizens have been arrested and detained over fabricated criminal charges, in order to avoid human rights criticism, and for the Egyptian government to be able to claim no political detainees are held in its prisons.
These massive arrests were followed by politicised and farcical mass trials that lacked the minimum standards of justice, where these courts systematically issue harsh sentences that amount to life imprisonment and the death penalty.
Over the past eight years, specifically in the aftermath of July 3, 2013, the civil and military judiciary referred the papers of 2,115 opponents to the Grand Mufti to give his advisory opinion, according to Egyptian law, in perpetration of their execution. The number of confirmed death sentences against political opponents has reached 878.
Of sentences, 190 of the convicted detainees have exhausted litigation degrees and the verdict became final. The Egyptian authorities have executed 93 detainees, while at least 97 detainees are still at risk of being executed at any time.
Arab Organisation for Human Rights in the UK invites you to participate in an online seminar, joined by parliamentarians, jurists, and activists, to discuss means of stopping the implementation of death sentences in Egypt.
