The Palestinian prisoner Khader Adnan, 44 years-old, continues his hunger strike for the 57th consecutive day in protest against his detention.
He is being held in al-Jamalah prison.
Adnan’s health has deteriorated as a result. He now suffers from severe pain across his body and has difficulty speaking. He continues to refuse medical support of any kind.
Israeli occupation forces arrested Adnan from his home in the town of Arraba in the Jenin Governorate on 5 February 2023.
During the arrest, occupation forces damaged Adnan’s family’s property and threatened them.
He declared his hunger strike the moment he was arrested.
Adnan has been arrested a total of 12 times and spent approximately eight years in occupation prisons, the majority of which were under “administrative detention”.
Administrative detention is detention without charge or trial, based on case files that neither the detainee nor their lawyer have access to. Such orders are under the control of the military, and can last for a maximum of six months, with an unlimited number of renewals.
There are currently more than 900 detainees held under such an order, including one woman and five children.
80 percent of those detainees have been imprisoned on at least one previous occasion.
The occupation authorities have issued around 12,000 detention orders over the past nine years. Last year saw the highest number of any one year, with 2,409 issued.
Despite the clear illegality of such orders, criticism of them from the international community, including Israel’s key allies, has been muted.
