Arab Organisation for Human Rights in the UK is organising a webinar: “Is Threatening Sanctions Enough? Europe’s Role in Enabling the Genocide in Gaza”
The webinar comes in light of recent decisions by the United Kingdom and the European Union to suspend certain trade agreements with Israel, following continued genocide and atrocities committed against civilians in the Gaza Strip. These long-overdue measures raise pressing questions: Are they enough? What impact do they really have? And when will Europe apply the same standards it enforced against Russia to the Israeli occupation?
The seminar will host a distinguished panel of politicians, diplomats, human rights activists, and legal experts, who will examine the depth of European involvement in the ongoing genocide and explore pathways for meaningful accountability.
Discussion Topics:
- Europe’s Material Support for the Gaza Genocide
An in-depth look at the arms exports, diplomatic backing, and political cover provided by European governments to the Israeli occupation since the beginning of the war.
- Double Standards in International Responses: Ukraine vs Gaza
A comparative analysis of Europe’s swift and unified sanctions against Russia versus its hesitant and symbolic approach to Israel’s war crimes.
- Beyond Symbolism: What Does Suspending Trade Agreements Actually Achieve?
An examination of the legal and practical consequences of current European measures — and what stronger actions are both possible and necessary.
- Europe’s Legal and Moral Responsibility
A discussion on how European states may be held accountable for complicity in war crimes, and the role of national courts, civil society, and political institutions in this process.
- Selective Justice and the Collapse of International Law
How the silence and inaction of the international system further isolate Gaza’s victims and undermine the universality of human rights law.
