The detainee, Magdi Abdo Al-Shabrawi, died in “New Badr” prison, as a result of medical negligence and inhumane conditions of detention.
Al-Shabrawi has been detained since January 4, 2020, in Al-Aqrab Prison, and was recently transferred to Badr Prison, while his son Mahmoud has been detained since 2014.
The victim is the third to die in November 2022, and the 37th since the beginning of the year in all Egyptian detention centers.
Egyptian prisons and detention centers are witnessing a rise in the number of deaths, while the authorities are still preventing the Red Cross Committee from inspecting prison conditions, leaving prisons completely without any oversight, exception of the Public Prosecution, which covers up on perpetrators of crimes of torture.
It should be noted that the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights states that “prisoners deprived of their liberty shall be treated with humanity, with respect for the inherent dignity of the human personality.”
