The European Union (EU) has expressed concern about “recent acts of violence by settlers in the village of al-Tawani and the hills south of Hebron against the Palestinian population and human-rights defenders.”
In a statement issued today, Thursday 7 April, the EU reported that on 4 April approximately 10 settlers threatened and harassed two Israeli human-rights defenders whilst they were escorting a Palestinian shepherd and his flock on private Palestinian land. “This is totally unacceptable”, the statement said.
In the same statement, the EU affirmed that “everyone has the right, individually and with others, to participate in peaceful activities against violations of human rights violations and fundamental freedoms.”
“According to international law, Israeli authorities must take all necessary measures to protect Palestinians and their property from settler violence.”
Over the last period, settlers have increased their attacks against Palestinian civilians, and their lands, farms, and homes.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), in 2020, 358 settler attacks against Palestinians were recorded.
In 2021 the number of attacks had increased to 496, with 370 resulting in property damage and 126 resulting in injuries to persons.
According to both UN security council and general assembly resolutions, Israeli settlements built within the occupied Palestinian territories are “illegitimate, illegal and a war crime.”
