The Syrian regime handed over a body to a family in Al- Suwayda. The body belongs to Raed Fawaz Al-Hamad, 58, who died under torture in one of the regime’s security detention centers in Damascus, “Branch 215”, from which pictures of victims of torture were leaked.
Branch 215 in Damascus, of the Military Intelligence, was famous for subjecting detainees to severe torture, which led to the death of thousands, and the disappearance of hundreds others.
Human rights bodies attributed the death of detainees in Branch 215 to “injecting them with air in the neck, breaking their necks, and raping of men and women” as well as the spread of diseases such as hepatitis, plague and tuberculosis.
3,532 detainees have been killed in Branch 215, documented by “Caesar”, a former military personnel, who leaked thousands of photos of of detainees who died in the regime’s prisons and detention centers.
Since March 18, 2011, a civil war has been going on following a crackdown on protests denouncing human rights violations in the country.
The international humanitarian law prohibits torture and other forms of ill-treatment at all times and requires that detainees are treated humanely and with dignity, in accordance to the international law.
