Arab Organisation for Human Rights in the UK (AOHR UK) emphasised that freezing the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) funding in Gaza by some countries is a clear support to the Israeli occupation gangs in carrying out the genocide of the Gaza Strip population. This new form of support helps annihilate the Palestinians in Gaza quicker, as those who survived the killing would not survive hunger and diseases.
The decision taken by the United States, followed by Britain, Germany, France, Australia, Canada, Italy, Austria, and Finland was based on a ridiculous and fabricated accusations by the Israeli occupation authorities, which claimed that 12 of the UNRWA employees “may” have been involved in the events of October 7. It is worth noting that the number of the UNRWA employees exceeds 30,000.
Taking such a decision after 116 days of an extermination war on the Gaza Strip, given the unprecedented records in the killings of civilians, means that these countries have lost all humanitarian and moral values, as the number of victims, scale of destruction and the large displacement of the population in Gaza did not change the supporting policy of these countries to the massacre. They have not reduced the flow of weapons nor imposed sanctions of any kind on the aggressor, but they rather focused on fabricated accusations made by the killers against 12 employees of an international organisation.
The Gaza Strip is witnessing a severe and unprecedented humanitarian crisis in the modern history due to the acts of genocide committed by the occupation gangs. The International Court of Justice has imposed precautionary measures to prevent the continuation of these criminal genocidal acts, which resulted in the killing of at least 26,637, and the injury of more than 65,387 citizens, including more than 10,000 children, and more than 7,000 women, in addition to those missing under the rubble, and the displacement of more than 1.7 million citizens.
Targeting the UNRWA at this critical stage is not a coincidence, as it comes to support the occupation gangs who have been unable to achieve their goals in the Gaza Strip, so they sought to disrupt the work of the agency, which does not only provides aids to Gaza, but to more than 5.9 million refugees in Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank, and Jordan.
It is worth mentioning that this is not the first time for the UNRWA to be targeted in particular by Israel and its allies, as it remains the main witness to the Palestinian Nakba since 1948. Many attempts have been made to dissolve the UNRWA, especially after the signing of the Oslo Accords, when attempts were made to turn it into an organisation to settle refugees and end their cause, and thus abolish the goal the agency was established for.
The UNRWA is a strong, reliable witness to the current genocide in the Gaza Strip, and it issues periodic reports on the conditions of the population. The International Court of Justice relied on a report of UNRWA to prove the motives for the belief of the Court that there is a possible genocide, which triggered Israel and its allies, who targeted the UNRWA immediately after the court’s decision.
AOHR UK praised some countries for refusing to comply with such a decision, and called on all countries to voice their rejection to this decision and provide all the necessary support to this important international body. It also called on Arab and Islamic countries to stop remaining silent and standing by watching the US arrogance, and to extend a helping hand to the UNRWA and other institutions in the Gaza Strip.
