Prisoner of conscience Somaya Maher,30, spent four years in the prisons of the Egyptian regime, which greatly affected her health and psychological condition.
The Egyptian authorities have prevented Somaya from receiving visits since her arrest, which negatively affected her psychological conditions.
Somaya also suffers from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, GERD, severe stomach infections, in addition to infections in the knee joints, while the Egyptian authorities refuse to transfer her to the prison hospital to receive the necessary treatment.
Security Forces arrested Somaya from her home in Damanhour in Beheira governorate, at dawn on October 17, 2017, a few days before her wedding.
The forces claimed her involvement with others in using a “secret program” over the Internet to harm the Egyptian national security and economy in the case known as “espionage with Turkey.”
In December 2020, the Cairo Criminal Court decided to release Somaya, but the Egyptian State Security Prosecution decided to renew her detention.
The Egyptian prosecutor charged Somaya with joining an outlawed group (the Muslim Brotherhood)” and “participating in practices to harm the country,” in Case No. 955 of 2017 (State Security Restriction).
Somaya was a chemical worker in one of the labs. Her mother got arrested for objecting to her daughter’s arrest. She was released later on and deported from Damanhour El-Beheira to the State Security Prosecution, in the suburb of the Fifth Settlement in Cairo, where her daughter was presented for investigations.
